According to a history of the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders, first formed in 1794, Lorne enlisted on 24 May 1794 and served under its first Lt.-Col., Duncan Campbell, who had assumed command at Stirling. On 05 May 1795, the Highlanders were ordered to join the expedition under Major-General Alured Clarke to the Cape of Good Hope, and there assist forces under the command of Admiral Elphinstone in taking the Cape Colony.

Records show that his brother, James, enlisted in the Highlanders on the same date, and also held the rank of Lieutenant. James was transferred to the Scotch Brigade on 06 May 1795 and so did not accompany his brother to the Cape.

Lorne completed his service with the Highlanders in 1797. According to his sister Susan, he was with the Black Watch (the 42nd) in British Guiana, when he died at Essequebo, near Demerara, in 1801.
