Sir Gerald Lowther was the son of Richard Lowther and Francis Middleton. He was born at Lowther Hall in Westmorland (now Lowther, Cumbria). Sir Gerard founded Lowtherton (now Irvinetown), Ireland. Gerald Lowther of Shrigley Parl was knighted on May 3 1618. Sir Gerald was a Justice of the Common Pleas in Ireland.

Sir Gerald was the second husband of Ann Bulmer. Ann was previously married to Anthony Welbury of Castle Eden in Durham, England. Ann Bulmer married off three of her daughters to Gerald's younger brothers. Her five known children were:

Sir Gerald was later married to Grace Bellingham and Anne Parsons. He died without having children with any of his wives. He willed his estate to Sir Richard Lowther (born April 1602), son of his brother, William Lowther of Ingleton.

Sir Gerald's wife Ann Bulmer was the daughter of Sir Ralph Bulmer (died Oct 9 1858) of Wilton, and Anne Tempest (died April 28 1555). Anne Tempest was the daughter of Sir Thomas Tempest of Holmside and Elizabeth Borough (who was the daughter of William Borough of Brough, Yorkshire).

Sir Gerald's wife Ann was one of seven known children of Anne Tempest and Sir Ralph Bulmer:

Ann Bulmer Welbury Lowther was the paternal granddaughter of Sir John Bulmer of Wilton and Ann Bigod. Both were esecuted for high treason against Henry VII for their involvement in the Pilgrimage of Grace. Ann Bigod Bulmer's nephew was Sir Francis Bulmer (born about 1507 to John de Bigod of Bainton and Joan Strangways), who was also executed in 1537. Sir Francis was the leader of Bigod's Rebellion. The paternal grandparents of Sir Francis were Anne Lowther's great-grandparents Ralph Bigod of Settringham (1457-April 1515) and his first of three wives, Margaret Constable (daughter of Sir Robert Constable of Flamborough and Agnes Wentworth).
