Lucia A. Harvilchuck

1946-2014

Lucia Abercrombie Harvilchuck - sister, teacher, poet, friend - died at Joyce Goldenberg Hospice in Pensacola on Dec. 27, 2014. She was 68 years old, and had prevailed against cancer for 17 years. She was the widow of the late Philip Harvilchuck of Pensacola.

Ms. Harvilchuck was the daughter of Rev. A. Vaughan Abercrombie and Dr. Charlotte M. Abercrombie, residents of the Azalea Trace retirement community in Pensacola for 15 years before their deaths. Ms. Harvilchuck was their constant companion and advocate, visiting them nearly every day. Her far-flung siblings (a sister in Connecticut and two brothers in Washington State) are "forever grateful for Lucia's affection and constancy in caring for our parents," said Ms. Harvilchuck's sister, Lois A. Street, of Ridgefield, Conn.

Ms. Harvilchuck graduated from Whittier College in California in 1968, and went on to obtain a master's degree from the University of Toronto. After further graduate work at Drew University in New Jersey, she chose the vocation of high-school English teacher and began her career.

Moving from New Jersey to Pensacola, Ms. Harvilchuck taught English at Pensacola Catholic High School from 1983-1988. Virginia Holland, a physical education teacher at Catholic, said "I knew we would be great friends" when Ms. Harvilchuck gave her a picture of a flower along with a quote from Georgia O'Keefe: "…nobody sees a flower, really…We haven't time - and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time."

Ms. Harvilchuck began teaching at Pensacola High School in the fall of 1998 and retired in August of 2010. She taught "Theory of Knowledge" in the school's International Baccalaureate program, offered to motivated students.

"Lucia's strong imprint remains on the PHS IB program in its student-centered philosophy," said Deanna Gordon, head of the IB program and a longtime friend. "Lucia was brilliant, loving and dear," she said.

Ms. Harvilchuck attained her National Board Certification, and among other honors, she was Teacher of the Year at PHS in 1996.

When Ms. Harvilchuck was in hospice, she was visited by large numbers of former students. Many students felt that Ms. Harvilchuck was not merely their favorite teacher. "She changed my life!" several of them said.

An enthusiastic gardener, Ms. Harvilchuck was a member of the Pineglades Garden Circle, whose members maintain a garden in the courtyard of the Escambia County Administrative Services building. Ms. Harvilchuck was dedicated to the club's project "Plant it Pink," featuring pink blooms to raise breast cancer awareness.

Ms. Harvilchuck was also an ardent fan of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and the Choral Society of Pensacola. She was a PSO season-ticket holder for over 30 years. In general, she preferred classical music, but she would never have dreamed of missing the PSO's pops concert every New Year's Eve.

Besides her sociability and involvement with the outside world, Ms. Harvilchuck nurtured a private side. When alone, she often wrote poetry, mainly for her own satisfaction or for sharing with a few relatives and friends. Some of her work, however, has appeared in "The Emerald Coast Review," a publication featuring works by West Florida writers.

Ms. Harvilchuck is survived by her siblings: a sister, Lois Abercrombie Street of Ridgefield, CT, and two brothers, Paul Manning Abercrombie of Snoqualmie Pass, WA, and David Manning Abercrombie of Chelan, WA; a brother-in-law, James Osborne Street, of Ridgefield, CT, and a sister-in-law, Margi Charles Abercrombie, of Chelan, WA; a nephew, Al Street of Brooklyn, NY, and six nieces: Sue Harvilchuck Kincaid of Pensacola, Gail Harvilchuck Massey of Pensacola, Janie Harvilchuck Hart of Gulf Breeze, Sharon A. Street of New York, NY, Karen A. Kump of Bozeman, MT, and Janet A. Looney of Seattle, WA; also four grand nephews, four grand nieces, one great-grandnephew and one great-grandniece.

Lucia Harvilchuck's family, friends and former students are invited to a memorial celebration of her life on Saturday, April 11, in the Oak Lawn Funeral Home chapel, 619 New Warrington Road, Pensacola. An hour for gathering and visiting begins at 1:00pm. The memorial ceremony begins at 2:00pm. It will be followed by light refreshments in Oak Lawn's café room.

Memorial donations in Lucia Harvilchuck's name can be made to the Charlotte Manning Abercrombie Scholarship Fund, Marietta College, Office of Advancement, 215 Fifth St., Marietta, OH, 45750-4004
