Gjertrud Pedersdatter Nyhus was born November 10, 1847 in Sigdal, Norway to the parents of Peder 'Per' Eriksen and Kari Ellevsdatter (Rundseie) Nyhus. She was baptised 05 December 1847 in Eggedal, Buskerud, Norway.

In 1866 the Per Nyhus family sailed from Drammen, Norway on the ship 'Superior.' Except for water the family had to take along all that was necessary for the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. Seven weeks later they reached New York and then made their way to Iowa.

Gjertrud married Nels O. Nelson and to this union, two children were born:
1. Olaus N. born November 30, 1870 at Northwood, Worth Co., Iowa.
2. Caroline Nilsdatter born April 19, 1872 at Freeman Twp., Freeborn Co., Minnesota.

In 1872, Gjertude's husband Nels passed away.

In June 1874, the Per Nyhus family arrived by covered wagon from Iowa to the Goose River area to homestead and became neighbors to Mr. Fingal Enger.

Gjertrud married Fingal Enger in 1875 at the home of Halvor and Brita Berg by Pastor Hagboe. Olaus N. Nelson took the Enger surname.

Only three months after the death of her husband, Gjertrud Enger passed away November 24, 1913 due to complications after surgery for the removal of gallstones. She was sixty six years of age. Everything possible was done for her during her illness, but the call of Him who rules our incoming and outgoings had been issued and after a brief struggle she went to join her husband. The mother of a large family, Mrs. Enger was a woman of noble character, strong personality and wide influence. After a useful, busy life she died as she had lived - honored, trusted and loved. Funeral services were held November 28, 1913. The funeral service was held first at the homestead at noon and later in the Little Forks Lutheran Church.

The Enger monument in Little Forks Cemetery weighs thirty-six thousand pounds and is one of the largest in the area.
