Funeral services will be held Friday for Mayor Harry Wooding, 94, who died here yesterday. The services will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will in the family plot in Green Hill Cemetery.
Mayor Wooding serving as chief executive of this city for 46 years, was claimant to the title of the oldest mayor in the United States. Enlisting in the Confederate Army when only 17 years of age, he served in many major battles of the War Between the States, including the battles of Gettysburg and Bull Run. He was Danville's last surviving Confederate Veteran.
He was born April 27, 1844, near Danville. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Empsey Wooding Spencer and Mrs. J. Overton Boatwright.
