MATHIS, Garland V. "GV" died on March 18, 2015, in Clearwater, with his sister, Katie and daughter, Maggie by his side, after a long battle with cancer. He was 80 years old. Preceded in death by his wife, Anne Peek Mathis; father, Sylvester Mathis; mother, Blanche Fry Mathis; and brothers, Dewey Mathis and Luther Mathis. Survived by his daughter, Margaret Williams and sisters, Bettie Mathis (Herbert) Friedman, Ynema Mathis (Gerald) Parker, Suzie Mathis (Jack) Ellis, Katie Mathis (Wilford) Perry, Dori Mathis (Andy) Amos, and Stacey Mathis (Bill) Will; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Griffith (Luther) Mathis. Born in Logan County, WV, his family moved to Chillicothe, OH where he graduated from Chillicothe High School (class of 1953) and married Lucy Anne Peek (class of 1955) and had one child. He took undergraduate classes at Ohio University and enlisted in the United States Air Force serving his country for eight years. His stations included Lookout Mountain TN, Houma, LA and Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Canada at a radar base on the "Pine Tree Line" that supported NORAD. He worked at Mead Corporation in Chillicothe, OH where he received a patent for the Twin Row drop Generator for ink jet printers and at Honeywell Avionics in Pinellas Park as an electronics engineer developing the main engine controller for the space shuttle. He retired from Honeywell and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Clearwater. GV's life will be celebrated in a dual service, with his wife, Anne Peek Mathis, who passed just nine days earlier, to be held at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home in Clearwater on Thursday, April 9 at 9:45 am. He will be buried with his wife at the National Cemetery in Bushnell; military service at 2:30 pm.
