Catherine Hayes Clark was born in County Cork, Ireland and came to America in 1847 (per 1900 U.S. census). She married John D Clark in 1849, most likely in Michigan. They lived in Jackson County, Michigan for a while until moving to Illinois. They moved back to Michigan in 1878. John died in 1899, whereupon Catherine moved to Illinois to live with family. Catherine was living with her daughter when she died. Her siblings included Denis Hayes, John "Jack" Hayes, Ellen Hayes Fitzpatrick and perhaps one or two others.
