A Republican, he served as executive secretary to Governor Joseph Ely, and worked on the campaigns of Governor and US Senator Leverett Saltonstall.
From 1939 to 1945 he was District Attorney of Middlesex County. In 1944 he was elected Lieutenant Governor, and he served one term, 1945 to 1947. In 1946 he was elected Governor, and he served one term, 1947 to 1948. He was defeated for reelection in 1948 and returned to practicing law.
