Homer S. Ferguson Jr., 90, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2015, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born on March 10, 1925, to Homer R. Ferguson and Catherine Holloway Ferguson, in Bluffton, Indiana.
Homer married Joyce L. Beatty on Sept. 19, 1945. Joyce preceded him in death on June 5, 2001.
Homer was a graduate of Peru High School. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of the Peru City Fire Department from January 1949 to August 1969, and served two terms as Fire Chief. He was the Supervisor of Building, Grounds and Transportation for Peru Community Schools from 1969 until his retirement in 1988.
Homer was a 50 year member of the Peru Maennerchor. He also held memberships in the Peru Masonic Lodge, was past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star, and was a former Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge. He was an avid supporter of the Circus City Festival and the Peru Amateur Circus and is the last surviving member of the "Three Amigos".
Homer is survived by his three daughters, Sandra K. (Rick) Ploss; Tamera S. Cooper; and Candace L. (Monroe) Alfrey; along with his grandchildren, Shelley A. Ploss, Cameron C. Cooper, Tarrin L. Cooper, and Simon A. Alfrey.
He is also survived by his sister, Doris M. Kehler, along with nieces and nephews, Carol (Larry) Hemdal, Homer E. (Margaret) Kehler, and George F. Kehler, Robert (Dianna) Ferguson, Jr., Suzan (Michael) Saturno, Mary (Troy) Coffee, Ronald D. Ferguson, Randy Ferguson, and Christy (Jeff) Wouster and many great nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Barbara Ferguson Sr., his brother-in-law, George M. Kehler, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold and Dorothy Jones.
The family would like to thank Senior Helpers, Angels of Mercy, Premier Hospice, Dr. William Rauh, and the Peru Fire Department, for the great care and assistance he was given.
Friends may call from 3-7 p.m., Thursday, at the Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, with masonic services to follow. Funeral services will be at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home on Friday, at 10 a.m. with burial at Mount Hope Cemetery Peru. Peru Masonic Lodge Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Military Graveside Service by Miami County Military Rites Unit.
Memorial contributions may be made to Peru Circus City Festival or Peru Fire Department Local 383.
