son of William A. and Alice (Calaway) Shipman Sr.

U.S. Marines veteran

Dr. William A. Shipman Jr., 75, of Hackensack, Minn., died Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, following complications of heart and lung failure.

Bill was born on May 31, 1939, in Warren, Ohio, the son of William A. Shipman Sr. and Alice (Calaway) Shipman. He grew up in Orwell, Ohio, and graduated from Grand Valley High School in Orwell in 1957. Bill joined the U.S. Marines in 1958 and served until 1961. On April 11, 1963, he married his childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Marcia Rex Shipman.

Bill received his BA in mathematics from Youngstown State University in 1968, and his PhD in economics from the University of Pittsburg in 1978. Bill was a professor at Wartburg College, Waverly, from 1972-1977 and 1979-2001. He taught at Youngstown State from 1977 to 1979 while he finished his PhD. He also took a year sabbatical from Wartburg to teach for the Boston University Overseas Military Program in 1987, where he lived in Germany with his family.

After retirement from Wartburg, Bill and Marcia moved to Hackensack. Bill also was an expert forensic economist, work which he continued to do until illness recently forced him to retire. He worked with many lawyers throughout the Midwest.

Bill was an active member of the UCC Church in Hackensack, serving in many capacities. He was also a member of the National Association of Forensic Economists. He was well known for his love of the outdoors -- fishing, hunting and conservation. He especially loved fishing, and enjoyed the hours spent on the lake with his daughters, grandchildren and buddy Karl.

Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Marcia; his daughters, Lisa (John) Salerno of Omaha, Neb., Laurel (Brian) Mirs of Burnsville, Minn., and Kristen Schmitt of Marion; grandchildren Caitlin Wellwood, Allison and William Koll, Jonathan and Sarah Mirs, and Sam and Daniel Schmitt; and a sister, Elizabeth Moore of Ashland, Tenn.
