9 March 1979 page A4:3Mrs. Mabel Barbee LeeA well-known regional author, Mabel Barbee Lee, at one time dean of women at Colorado College, died Dec. 12 in a nursing home in Santa Barbara, Calif. She was 94. Mrs. Lee spent many of her earlier years in Cripple Creek and wrote her first book, "Cripple Creed Days," at the age of 75. It was followed by four more books - "And Suddenly It's Evening" in 1963, "The Rainbow Years" and in 1966, "Back in Cripple Creek" in 1968, and "The Gardens of My Life" in 1970, which earned her sobriquet of the "Grandma Moses of the Publishing World."Born April 11, 1884, in Silver Reef, Utah, Mrs. Lee moved with her family to Cripple Creek during the city's "Gold rush" era, and lived there for 10 years. She taught English in the high school in Victor and one of her promising students was Lowell Thomas. Thomas was partly responsible for her career as a writer. He read one of her articles in the Reader's Digest many years after he had become a famous journalist, and he urged her to write a book about her memories of the Cripple Creek - Victor Gold District during its heyday. "Cripple Creek Days," published in 1958 by Doubleday Publishing Co., was the result. Mr. Lee was married in 1908 to mining engineer Howard S. Lee and spent 10 years traveling with her husband in mining camps from Orgeon to Mexico. After his death in 1918, she became dean of women at Colorado College. In 1931 she helped found Bennington College in Vermont. She was also associaited with Radcliffe and Whitman colleges, and with the University of California in Berkeley. Mrs. Lee is survived by a daughter, Barbara Lee of San Rafael, Calif., who played the original rol of Portia on the old radio show, "Portia Faces Life."
