Beau was a Norwegian Forest Cat. He had long, angora fur and was colored black and white like a tuxedo. His ruff was about 8 inches across when brushed out. We had him groomed and shaved several times, but he originally had tufts on all four paws. He had fur in his ears and a really long undercoat of fur. He was around 10 years of age- possibly several years older- when he went to Rainbow Bridge. We first saw him on February 19 2008, so his birthday for us became the next day when we adopted him.

His original owner was an elderly woman in Gaithersburg, Maryland who named him 'China' because he was so precious. Beau was apparently a purebred Wegie, and we later discovered there actually was a bulk breeder in Gaithersburg that bred bi-color tuxedo pattern Norwegians around that time. The original owner had him declawed. At some point he was given to her neighbor who foolishly and cruelly let him go outside where he couldn't defend himself against other cats and dogs.

That family turned him over to Montgomery County Humane Society Shelter in the summer of 2007 because their young son didn't handle him well. When his 30 days were up and he hadn't been adopted, a woman from a second chance rescue called Cat Tails saw how beautiful he was and took him home along with several other cats. He was eventually brought to Delmar on the eastern shore of Maryland to stay with Good Shepherd Cat Sanctuary until someone wanted him at the local Petsmart. That would be us- his real Mom and Dad. We picked him because he looked like our other tuxedo cat Barnee and he seemed like a cat in distress that needed immediate love and care. I knew we had to take him as soon as I picked him up and held him. He weighed so little that I cried in the middle of the night saying that we had to go back and get him. He had been in rescue shelters for a total of six months.

Beau was going to be a companion for Barnee, but it turned out that they really didn't like each other much. And each wanted to be an only cat. Beau was very territorial. But he was satisfied with having just the kitchen, living room, and dining room as long as Barnee stayed out. Barnee had the downstairs bedroom and the entire upstairs, which was usually gated shut. Whenever Barnee's area was opened accidentally- Beau would rush upstairs, use Barnee's litter box, and then run back down.

Beau had giardia and other issues that had been overlooked before he came to us, so there were veterinary visits and expenses. He was misdiagnosed and labelled terminally ill, although he actually had a treatable condition. Beau didn't even like cat treats because he apparently never had any in his earlier life. He didn't know how to play with cat toys. But eventually he acquired a taste for the occasional Pounce treat. He also learned to play with dangle toys. He seemed surprised that anyone wanted to pay attention to him.

Beau provided companionship and comfort to his Dad for over seven years. The only person he loved and trusted was his Dad. He would stare out the storm door and scratch the glass trying to open the door and be outside with his Dad when he was working in the yard. He would wait by the garage door whenever his Dad left the house for more than a few hours. Beau would also do bad things to let his Dad know he didn't like to be left alone overnight. Beau was an indoor cat. He was escorted outside several times to get the lay of the land. During his last walk outside he was discovered ten minutes later on the roof while his Dad was talking to a neighbor.

Beau had slight heart and kidney problems in the last year or so. He got along quite well taking a couple of pills and enjoyed his life in a cat-friendly home with catwalks and window perches. He liked to go in the sunroom several times a day. He also had his own bedroom upstairs which the younger kitties knew to stay out of. Beau would try doing anything the white kitties did. He sometimes walked across the room on the catwalk high above the floor after seeing them do it all the time. He slept in odd places that the white kitties discovered. He even tried out sleeping in their beds whenever he felt like it.

After seven years together Beau's Dad was told that he had F.I.P. (feline infectious peritonitis) because he had fluid in his chest cavity. His Dad decided to send Beau to heaven because he had not eaten on his own for about a week (although his Dad syringe fed him). The vet had been hopeful just a few days earlier. We will never know for sure what was wrong, but he seemed to be suffering at that point- so his Dad did what he thought was best for Beau. Mister White and Snoball will certainly miss him just like his Mom and Dad will. He was a sweet, docile cat who lived seven lucky years with people who doted over him.

Beau's Dad also had a dog named Bo who died along time ago.
