MEMORIES OF MIKE

From Debbie Dougherty:

Mike loved Duane Allman. I can remember sitting in his room with Duane playing on the stereo and Mike playing right along with him. He and I loved the same type of music and he played in a talent contest in 1976 just before he graduated high school. The name of his group was 'Skyway.' Skyway won first place and then went on to state coming in third place at state level. One of the songs I remember him playing was 'No Way Out' by the Allman Brothers, Duane on lead. Mike in my opinion was just as talented as Duane. He and I both shared a love for Duane. I read a book about Duane and his brother Gregg and it reminded me of mine and Mike's relationship. I bought him a copy and gave it to him a few years ago.

Duane died in 1972 from a motorcycle accident. His brother Gregg grieved. Mike used to draw and he drew me a picture of Duane. It looked exactly like Duane. He was a very talented artist.

Anyway, Duane is from Florida but lived and is buried in Ga and his tombstone reads:

'I love being alive and I will be the best man I possibly can. I will take love wherever I find it and offer it to whoever will take it...seek knowledge from those wiser and teach those who wish to learn from me.'

This scripture on his tombstone reminds me of how Mike lived.

I can remember when I started school (first grade) and I was scared and homesick. Mike said 'don't be scared Deb, When you start missing Hazel look at this and know she's here waiting for you to come home' and he handed me a picture that he drew of our kitchen and it looked so real. He put it in my notebook and told me to look at it whenever I became homesick and that would make everything better. Mike was sensitive to others that way. I now realize he must have understood what it was like to experience separation anxiety.

Cause of Death: Peritonitis secondary to diverticulitis.
