Rudolph Rom, 90, of Ely died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at White Community Hospital in Aurora.

He was born April 16, 1913, in Greaney, Minnesota to Michael and Mary (Simonic) Rom, immigrants from Austria (now Slovenia), and graduated from Ely High School in 1930.

His long construction career took him to Newfoundland, Churchill Bay, Manitoba, Anchorage, Alaska, Thule, Greenland, and the Oahe Dam in South Dakota. He was construction superintendent for the JFK School in Ely and later employed by Reserve Mining until his retirement. He was active in the Ely Senior Citizens Center, serving as president for several years. He was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ely.

He is survived by his brother Albert (Marty) Rom; three children, Sandra Rom, Susan Zuriff, and Edward Rom; four stepchildren, Clarice (Bob) Haapala, Mavis (Gene) Daub, Jane Maki, and Alan (Rosemary) Maki; 14 much loved and loving grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Rudy was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Martha; his second wife of 41 years, Lillian; two brothers; three sisters; and stepson Clyde Maki.
