Varanus was a mariner, Captain of the Packet Sarah Ann, which ran between Harwich and New Bedford. He founded the Spiritualists Society about 1875. He owned the old campground, called "Nickerson's Grove" in Harwich located on Gilbert Road, where the Spiritualists meetings were held. He lived on Sisson Road where the Country Inn [now known as Mooncussers] is now.
