Stephen was one of five children of John & Catherine Eliza (Shoots sp?) Conklin. Peekskill was full of related Conklins. The Conklin family had been there since before the Revolutionary War.
He married Sarah L. Young in 1874 and had eight children, four reaching adulthood. Published in the Highland Democrat July 11, 1885 - "CONKLIN-In Peekskill, died July 2d, son of Stephen and Sarah Conklin, aged 2 years." Children of record:
1. George Henry Conklin, 1876–1935
2. Walter J. Conklin, 1879-1906
3. Mary M. Conklin, 1881-1964
4. Stephen Conklin, 1883–1885
5. Percy Conklin, 1886-1930
Stephen was a laborer and the family moved every few years always renting. In a 1910 "Highland Democrat" news item, it noted Stephen, while employed as a street sweeper, fell in a fit hitting his head. It stated, "Conklin is a victim of epilepsy." Epilepsy is a disorder of the nerve-cell function in the brain. I don't know when he was first diagnosed with this seizure disorder or if it was correctly diagnosed. Only a minority of epilepsy cases have a clear cause. Typically, the known causes of adult seizure involve some injury to the brain or a stroke. Back in the 1900 census he only worked for 6 months - did he have an injury? In 1912 he suffered another public fit. People with epilepsy have been stigmatized, shunned, or even imprisoned and feared. Having so many relations in Peekskill probably helped and was lucky to be employed. The 1912 Annual Report for the Village of Peekskill has listed under Highway Dept. Expenditures: Stephen Conklin, labor, $193.18. In the two years before that he made $358. and $344.
He spent the first part of 1913 in Connecticut with his son Percy but died in Peekskill.
