Sarah was the eldest of six children born to Clinton Young and his wife (Bridget or Mary Jane). Her father died in a railroad accident in 1872 and her mother remarried in 1874. In the 1880 census in Yorktown, her mother and younger siblings George & Ann were living with their stepfather Jacob Fisher.
Sarah married Stephen Conklin in 1874 and had eight children, four reaching adulthood.
