Robert Peter Pete Hayes, 87, of Lower Towamensing Township, died Aug. 20, 2008, in Blue Mountain Health Systems Palmerton Campus. He was the husband of the late Annette M. (Greene) Hayes, who passed away in 2006. He was a graduate of Tri-State University, Angola, Indiana. Pete was a career draftsman who started work first for the former New Jersey Zinc Company, Palmerton. He then worked for Lehigh Portland Cement Company, Allentown. He subsequently worked as a freelance draftsman with different companies until returning to New Jersey Zinc to finish his career. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a longtime member of First United Church of Christ, Palmerton, where he served as a past council member. He was active in many aspects of church life. Pete was a member of the Garden City, Long Island, Masonic Lodge, as well as a Past Worthy Patron of Order of the Eastern Star chapters from Slatington to Hazleton. He enjoyed singing and was a member of the Barnstormers vocal group. Born in Manhattan, N.Y., he was a son of the late Lionel and Helen (Surtees) Hayes.
Survivors: Sons, William of Palmerton, John and his wife Karen of Allentown; three grandchildren.
Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Monday in the church, 457 Delaware Ave., Palmerton. Call 10:30-11 a.m. Monday in the church. Arrangements, T.K. Thomas Funeral Home, Palmerton.
