OLof J. "O.J." Bentel Jr. peacefully passed away on April 6, 2015, at the age of 78. He was the beloved husband of Nelda Walker Bentel and the devoted father of William "Joey" Bentel (Donna), Dennis Bentel (Margaret), Lisa Bentel Perez (Chris), and Kevin Bentel. O.J. was a cherished grandfather of Christopher, Jordan, Krystle (Andrew), Jonathan, Tara, Michelle (Donaldvon), Danielle, Kevin, Amanda, and Kaitlyn, and a loving great-grandfather of Olivia, Alaina, and Kandace. He was also the brother of Una Bentel Ritzman and the late George Bentel, and the son of the late Una Blanchard Bentel and Olof J. Bentel Sr. Additionally, he is survived by his former son-in-law, Oliver Silvey, along with numerous other family members and friends.


O.J. proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and later retired as a Deputy Sheriff from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. He was a dedicated member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Gretna. Throughout his life, O.J. was deeply involved with Louisiana Kids and served as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 440, chartered through the Terrytown Playground. Known for his volunteer spirit, he was always ready to lend a helping hand and never shied away from the spotlight. His impact and involvement touched countless lives, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.


The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hospice Compassus and West Jefferson Medical Center for their compassionate care during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the First Baptist Church of Gretna, 100 Gretna Blvd., Gretna, LA 70053.
