Dreadful and Fatal Accident
"Samuel Bronson, son of Rev. Elisha Bronson, was fatally shot last Thursday morning. The particulars are as follows: A number of men had assembled at the house of Mrs. Johnson, about one mile from Liberty Corners, for the purpose of threshing. While preparing for breakfast, one of them took up a gun, not supposing it to be loaded, and stepped into the yard. While going through some military tactics, his hand, came in contact with the lock, causing it to go off. Bronson stood nearby, and the contents entered his head. He lived a short time, but was entirely unconscious of anything that had happened. It seems that the night before a man had loaded the gun to go out next morning and shoot woodchucks, and no one knew of this fact. Bronson was a very fine man, loved and esteemed by all who knew him. By this act of carelessness he has been deprived of his life, his friends of his society, and the community of a quiet, peaceable and well disposed friend. His remains were taken to his father’s residence at Loon Lake, and on Friday afternoon a large concourse of people assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to one whom they held dear. He leaves a large circle of relatives to mourn his sudden departure. It is to be hoped this will be a warning to all to be careful how they handle such weapons of death.”

A similar item in a Rochester paper used the "Brownson" spelling of the surname.

Per census records, Samuel's wife's name was Matilda, and they had children Luther and Mary E. Brownson. Following Samuel's death, Matilda married a neighbor, Mr. John L. Gilman. She is buried in Canaseraga Cemetery near her daughter, Mary E. Brownson Karnes.
