Thomas Black was born on December 13, 1883 in Smithville, DeKalb County, Tennessee, the son of Robert Black (1844–1902) and Ida Susan (Mandelbaum) Black (1856–1905).
He was married to Ethel Marion Morcombe (1896–1983), and she was the daughter of John Henry Morcombe (1845–1932) and Annie (Wells) Morcombe (1868–1946).
A postal telegraph operator living at 1217 Plymouth Avenue in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, Thomas was 57 years old and married when he died on May 18, 1941 at home of "nephritis (arteriosclerotic kidney)." Burial was the next day in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
