"Out Of The Past. From the files of the Rockbridge County News, FIFTY YEARS AGO. December 19, 1895. An accident appalling by reason of its fatality and suddenness took place Saturday afternoon near Big Stone Gap, Va., in which George H. Beeton, the twenty-one year old son of Mr. John Beeton of Lexington and l four companions lost their lives and two were crippled. Mr. Beeton and six other men, working on the construction of a short piece of railroad sought shelter under a large ledge of rock at the noon hour to eat their lunch. The ledge, weighing an estimated 40 tons, collapsed, crushing the men beneath." Published in the Rockbridge County News (Virginia), Vol 62, #8, dated 20 Dec 1945 (see photo).

His father was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Their motif "FLT" in 3 rings (links of a chain) is on the top of John's side of their shared marker. It stands for Friendship, Love and Truth, the basic guidelines to live by in this old fraternal group. The iron marker in front of John's side is a Southern Cross of Honor. It is a replica of the metal they received for honorable service. It says CSA for Confederate States of America.
