Her mother was Ross May Hayes. Born in Higginsville, Missouri in 1890. Died in St.Louis in 1958. Ellen was born Ellen Ann Schachner in 1916. Walter Schachner and Ross Hayes were married a short time and subsequently divorced. Ellen was a gifted actress. Through the 1940s-1970s, she did plays on broadway (even involved in the Mercury Theatre with Orson Welles), toured in many plays (with Vincent Price and others), summer stock. She was also an acting teacher and a director. She was a teacher and director later for the blind and put on many productions at the Lighthouse for the Blind in Manhattan. One of which I had the pleasure of acting in. She died on May 22, 1982 in Manhattan. As per her wishes, she was flown to Missouri for burial near her mother. (Submitted by B. Sanders)
