Donald was born to Bert and Winifred Swihart March 30th, 1954. He was baptized at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lincoln Park on November 28th, 1954. His cousin Mina and Uncle Art Kalis were his sponsors. He attended high school in Southgate, Michigan. Don & his brothers spent a lot of their time up north fishing and hunting with their dad. Don's family affectionately called him "Chubby."

Life when he was born:

• Dwight Eisenhower is president
• Gas is .29 cents/gallon
• The first mass vaccination of children against Polio begins
• U.S. officials announce that a hydrogen bomb test has been conducted on Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.
• The Boeing 707 is released after about two years of development.
• The USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine, is commissioned by the US Navy.
• Brown vs. Board of Education- decision by the U.S. Supreme Court which ruled that U.S. state laws establishing racial segregation in public schools are unconstitutional, even if the segregated schools are otherwise equal in quality.
• The Boy Scouts of America desegregates on the basis of race.
• The words "Under God" are added to the United States Pledge of Allegiance.
