W. W. Newcomet Dies At Hospital After An Illness
W. W. Newcomet, 58, vice president and general manager of the Reiss Steamship Co. and many other corporations and associations, died at Memorial Hospital at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday after an illness.
Because his life was devoted almost entirely to his family and hios work his acquaintanceship in Sheboygan was limited to an intimate group of friends who knew him as "Walt." In the shipping industry he was a man of considerable importance, widely known and highly respected for his abilities.
In his capacity of general manager of the Reiss Steamship Co., he virtually ran the fleet of ships by long distance telephone and was on call to duty twenty-four hours a day. A highly efficient person, he took great pride in seeing to it that his standards of perfection were observed by the organization he managed.
Came Here In 1932
In his youth he was an athlete of marked ability having played football at the University of Illinois, was a member of the varsity crew at the University of Pennsylvania and also played in indoor polo with Troop A. of the U.S. Calvary in Cleveland, Ohio.
Walborn Worthington Newcomet was born June 1, 1902 in Indianapolis, Ind., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace E. Newcomet. Because his father was the vice president of the Pennsylvania railroad the family moved frequently which accounts for him attending the Universities of Illinois, Ohio State and Pennsylvania. It was at Pennsylvania that he received his degree in engineering.
Mr. Reiss became associated with the Reiss Steamship Co. in 1926 in the Cleveland, Ohio office. He and his family moved to Sheboygan in 1932 and for many years have made their residence at 225 Huron Ave.
Besides his connections with the Reiss Steamship Co., Mr. Newcomet served many other organizations. He was vice president and director of the Rockport Steamship Co. and the Red Arrow Steamship Co. He was executive vice president and a director of the Drummond Dolomite, Inc. of Drummond Isle, Mich.
In the C. Reiss Coal Co., he was vice president in the coal purchasing division. He was also a director of the Lake Carriers Association of Cleveland, Ohio, the American Bureau of Shipping of New York City and the Great Lakes Protective Association.
Locally he was a member of the Pine Hills Country Club and the Sheboygan Lodge No. 229 of the Elks.
The marriage of Mr. Newcomet to Evelyn Landon took place in Cleveland, Ohio on June 12, 1926. Besides Mrs. Newcomet he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Rex S. (Evelyn) Spiller of Sheboygan and Mrs. A. B. (Patricia) Hudson of Grosse Pointe, Ind., one son, Walborn W. Newcomet Jr. of Sheboygan, on sister, Mrs. J. B. Clow of Lake Forest, Ind., and six grandchildren.
Preceding him in death was one son, Horace E. Newcomet II in 1932 and a sister Marian in 1938.
Funeral services for his Sheboygan friends will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels. Further services for Chicago, Ill. and Cleveland, Ohio friends at 3 p.m. Friday at Rose Hill Cemetery Chapel, Chicago, where burial will be made. Friends here may call at the Ballhorn Funeral Chapels after 3 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established in Mr. Newcomet's name for the Sheboygan Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
