with the Sammy Watkins Orchestra,
until he entered the U.S. Navy.

ENSIGN SIDNEY S. APPLEGATE, formerly of
Cleveland, son of Mrs. D. Applegate,
Vermilion, Ohio.
The Navy Department notified Mrs.
Applegate that her son, Sidney, a
newly-commissioned Ensign in the
Naval Air Force, died in the crash
of a training plane on Aug 6, (1944)
into the ocean off the Florida coast.
Ensign Applegate, a former member of
Sammy Watkins' Orchestra, currently
playing at Hotel Hollenden, was
stationed at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
He was a graduate of Bellville (Ohio)
High School, and was a native of that
city. Memorial services for him were
held at the base chapel last Wednesday.
