Bertha Lee Hunter, 91, of Leonard Avenue, Newton, NC, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at Abernethy Laurels following a period of declining health.

Born in Danville, VA on August 19, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Henry Arthur Smart and Rosa Burns Smart.

Bertha was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church and was a foster mother. "When God made good parents, we got the top of the pick".

Mrs. Hunter is survived by her daughters, Gail Watson and husband, Paul, of Morganton, NC and Terri Garrett of Hickory, NC; grandchildren, Cody Watson of Morganton, Denise Dunford and husband, Aaron, of Mooresville, NC; Franklin Trent Garrett, III and wife, Chiung, of Annadale, VA; Matthew William Garrett of Granite Falls, NC; and Christopher Garrett of Washington, D.C.; and a great-grandchild, Garrett Patrick Lien of Annadale.

In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, William Ezra Hunter, five sisters, and one brother.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 31, 2008 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Father Kenneth Whittington officiating. The family will receive friends at the church thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Mocksville, NC.
