Former Cigarmaker Passes Away at Home of Daughter, Mrs. Robert Van Vliet.
Joseph J. Hess, 76, former cigarmaker died Saturday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Van Vliet, Steuben St., after an illness of several months.
Mr. Hess was born in Utica, March 1, 1851 and had always resided here. After retiring from the cigar making trade, he was employed for a time at the Utica Knit Mills, No. 1. He was a member of the Cigarmaker's Union of this city.
Mr. Hess was twice married, his first wife, Christine Raehm having died 24 years ago and his second wife Carrie Mack, passing away four years ago.
Surviving are three sons, Joseph E., John M., and Henry G. Hess, all of Utica; four daughters, Mrs. Ray Lowell, Ft. Plain, Mrs. Fred Tritten, Mrs. Roland Merrill and Mrs. Robert Van Vliet, all of Utica and 19 grandchildren.
