Real Estate Developer. He was a hard working real estate mogul, credited for pioneering the concept of modern indoor suburban shopping malls. In the 1950s, he noticed that Americans were moving to the suburbs and thought they would be a need for centralized places to shop. He founded Taubman Centers Incorporated, which started building high-end shopping malls and turned them into the nation’s town squares. As his retail centers thrived, he bought the A&W Restaurant Franchise in 1982, served on the boards of Chase Manhattan Bank of New York, R.H. Macy Company and Getty Oil, plus opened the Mall of San Juan, Puerto Rico, in March 2015. He also was known as the man who rescued the British auction house Sotheby’s, but he was implicated in a scandal that shook the art world. Taubman was convicted in a trial for price fixing, fined $7.5 million and imprisoned for ten months in 2002. In 2007, he authored the book, “Threshold Resistance: The Extraordinary Career of a Luxury Retailing Pioneer”. His company currently owns and manages 19 regional shopping centers nationwide and Forbes placed his net worth at $3.1 billion in 2015. He died of a heart attack at age 91.
