Son of Edmond Judkins and Zilpha Rice. Many of his life documents, including census reports and his military record, call him Benjamin R. Judkins or Judkin. The grave marker, which calls him Benjamin F., may be in error.

He served in the Confederate forces during the Civil War as a Private, Co. A, 16th Tennessee, and in Co. I, 4th Tennessee (McLemore's Cavalry).

He was a blacksmith by trade.

He married Betty (or Sallie) Parker before 1870. They had at least 5 children:
