Donald was living with his family in Dillsboro, until he went to a Cincinnati Recruiting Office in Ohio and enlisted in the Marines 29 August 1966.
Upon arriving in Vietnam, Donald was assigned to the 3rd Platoon of Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Kingfisher, when the Marines encountered hostile forces, 2 kilometers west of Con Thien (Hill 158). Donald died of a gunshot wound to chest, as a result of hostile rifle fire.
