A memorial service celebrating his life will be held in the Quad-Cities area in April. Burial was in Arizona.
Alton was born Jan. 26, 1916, in Carbon Cliff to Ernest and Augusta Dennhardt. At the age of 17, he started his adventurous life riding the rails from Illinois to Texas, and also drove cattle to the Chicago stockyards. Al finally settled down in the Quad-Cities and was a foreman for George Evans Corp. for many years. His efforts were served on the home front manufacturing gun barrels, tool boxes and cable reels for the military.
In 1946, he established A.W. Dennhardt Co., a painting and packing business that evolved into a lifetime of specializing in metal finishing for John Deere, International Harvester, East Moline Metal Products, Caterpillar, the Ertle Co. and many more manufacturers in the area.
In 1998, he sold his company and spent winters in Arizona and the summers along his beloved Mississippi. Al was active in River City Rotary and Chemical Coaters Association and played each week in a golf league at Byron Hills. He was a member of First Christian Church, Moline.
Alton married Lillian B. Ashley in October 1934 and they raised five daughters, who now reside in Arizona. Daughters (and spouses) are Sandra Lagerblade (Russell), Sharol Schmidt (Hank), Vicki Taradash (Tom), Kim Whatley (Tom) and Laurie B. Dennhardt. In addition to his daughters, Alton leaves behind nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard, Illinois City, and Lloyd, Elkhart, Ind.; half-brothers, Laverne and Gerald, both in Arizona, and their sister, Doris. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Lillian; his parents; a sister, Irene; and a half-brother, Duane.
