He fought in the Civil War serving three years. Newton served in the 12th Regiment Cavalry, Co. E, same as his brother-in-law William JJ Ritchie. His mother Harriet (Gann) Hall Snead had to give consent he said he was 18 yrs and 3 mos old in Oct. of 1863. He actually was 16 yrs old in 1850 the census was age 0. He was mustered in Dec. 29, 1863 in St. Louis and discharged June 15, 1865.
His father died when he was a baby. His aunt Caroline Gann Snead also died about the same time in DeKalb county, Missouri. His mother, Harriet Gann Hall married 1852 Olgesby Snead her sisters widower.
Newton is my 2nd gg-grand uncle. Rest in peace
The 1900 states they had been married for 26 years putting them marriage circa 1874.
