David, the son of Harold E. Barber and Lena Barber of Hayward California, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 16, 1967 in Oakland. He arrived in Vietnam on May 1, 1968 and was assigned to Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During Operation MAMELUKE THRUST a patrol from Company L under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the 1st Battalion in the vicinity of Hill 1062, in Hieu Duc District of Quang Nam Province was hit with a volley of sniper fire. PFC Barber was hit and killed by the hostile rifle fire.
