Harriet Ann V. Winston was born in Manchester, Va., daughter of James and Tabitha Winston. She married Alpheus H. Hobbs on 10 August 1850 in Petersburg. They had five children, but only one (Martha Ann Hobbs, born about 1857) was living by 1860, at the time of their separation. They separated in Jul 1860 and divorced in 1863. She was the common law wife of Owen Comerford (the court stipulated that she could not remarry; they eventually married on 7 Jan 1880 in Petersburg.) After his death in 1885, she remarried Alpheus H. Hobbs on 22 Oct 1890 in Petersburg. He died at the Soldiers' Home in Richmond in 1896, with burial in Hollywood Cemetery.
