Albert Gottleib Koepchen was orphaned at a young age along with his sister and brothers; their father Friedrich Wilhelm Koepchen was murdered in a field outside of Chicago in 1872; their mother Christiane nee Berger died a year later in 1873. The children were sent to live at the German Evangelical-Lutheran Orphan Home in Addison IL. Albert died in the orphanage at age 7 of pneumonia.
