He married second Tennessee Celeste Claflin. They have two marriage records on two separate dates, the second time recognizing that she had previously been married to a Bortle.
In 1884 he founded the Alexandra House (now called Queen Alexandra House) named after the future Queen Alexandra who was then the Princess of Wales.
He died at his home Doughty House in Richmond, Surrey, England.
