Roger Wayne Aase, age 69, passed away suddenly at his residence in Everson, Washington on Tuesday morning, the 21st of April 2015, due to heart complications. He successfully fought cancer, but his heart wasn't able to keep up.
He was born on February 22, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, to George and Mildred Aase. The family stayed in Nebraska until he was four years old, then moved to Ferndale, Washington. They ended up settling in on a farm on the Siper Road in Everson where he spent most of his childhood. He attended classes at Mount Baker High School.
Roger joined the army at a young age, enlisting shortly after his 17th birthday. He served in the army as a class E private for a year where he was stationed in Vietnam while he learned how to use explosives. He was honorably discharged in 1966.
He gained employment on a fishing vessel; The Deep Freeze. Roger quickly became the manager of the vessel, making the Deep Freeze a vital part of the fishing industry.
He married Penny Swartwood, and they had a son, Tony, in 1968. He then married Karen Gerjets in 1971, and they had three daughters.
Roger worked for the Whatcom County Road Department for 17 years. Then he decided to start his own business. He enjoyed the life of being his own boss.
Roger enjoyed the outdoors, working with his hands - if it wasn't woodworking, he was elbow deep in a car covered with oil. He enjoyed fishing, shooting guns, barbequing, and spending time with family. He was a jack-of-all-trades and was always willing to share his knowledge with those around him.
He was a member of the American Legion in Sumas.
He is preceded in death by his son, Tony Aase; his sister, Joyce Carslay; and father, George Aase.
There will be visitation at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Deming on April 27, 10:00-10:45, with a service to follow at 11:00. There will be a graveside service with military honors at 2:30 at Greenacres in Ferndale.
Services have been provided by Sig's Funeral Services.
Roger will be greatly missed by all. He was generous, loving and thoughtful to all those in his life. He will be remembered for his bright smile and his great sense of humor.
