He was raised on the family farm. When about 15 he worked in the clothier trade in the fall and winter. In the summers he worked some as a carpenter and joiner, along with the farming until about 22. At the age of 28 at West Edmeston he built a furnace where he constructed farm implements. After about 20 years he started also making cutters and wagons, while still continuing some carpentry work.
Initially he was a Whig, but later became a Republican. He was also a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church in West Edmeston.
