Mabel became a teacher and taught at Crestline Heights Elementary until she married. She married Harvie M. McGehee in 1913 and gave birth to ten children. In 1918, Mabel and Harvie moved to a farm in Toney, Madison County, AL where they lived happily until 1931. During the Depression, they lost the farm and were forced to move back to the south side of Birmingham where they lived until their deaths.
