John Henry Gross was born in Russia in 1858. He married Jennie about 1885. After leaving Russia in 1890 John, Jennie & their son Alexander lived for a brief time in Wisconsin where daughter Bessie was born. They then moved to Portland, Oregon in the early 1890s. John & Jennie Gross spoke English, but their primary language was German.

They had 10 children. Two had died before 1900. Their children were Alexander (born in Russia in 1889), Bessie (Wisconsin 1891), Lena (born in Oregon in 1894), Carl (Oregon 1895), Lizzie (Oregon 1897), Herman (Oregon 1899), Emma (Oregon about 1902) and Anna (about 1904).

John broke his hip in March 1940 and died in April.
