Jewett was a Jackson Herald correspondent and writer of community news from 1912 until his death. In honor of their community, the city of Nicholson remembers him for this quote:

“Some places are praised for the magnificent buildings, while others are honored for the fine scenery. Nicholson would not take the prize of the above cases, yet she can furnish just as good, cultured people as any town.”
~ Jewett Barnett
Jackson Herald, 6 Jan 1917

On 28 Jun 1963, Jewett drowned when the automobile in which he was riding plunged into flooded North Oconee River in Athens, Georgia. Six of Jewett & Nettie's grandchildren also perished in this tragic accident:

Deborah Jean Greene (1953-1963)
Laura Dale Greene (1957-1963)
Wanda Elaine Epps (1954-1963)
Kathryne Diane Epps (1955-1963)
Penny Sue Epps (1958-1963)
Charles C. Epps (1962-1963)

Another passenger, babysitter Lula Mae Watkins, was the 8th victim of this terrible incident. Only Jewett's wife, Nettie, and their grandson, Jerry, survived.
