Lieut. Rencher, 22 Buried in Opelika

This city paid tribute to its first war casualty today at funeral services for Lieut. John L Rencher, 22, killed in a plane crash neat Agate, Colo., April 18.
Flags lined downtown streets through which the cortege passed and a squadron of Air Corps planes from Lawson Field, Fort Benning – with one ship missing-- roared overhead as the flag draped casket was lowered into the grave.
Local business houses were closed during the funeral. Lieut. Rencher is survived by the parents, Mr. and Mrs. D M Rencher, a brother Lieut D M Rencher, Jr of Fort Sill Okla., and a sister Mrs Paul Scruggs, Birmingham.

The bodies of two army fliers, killed Saturday in the crash of their training place 25 miles northwest of Simla, were recovered from the plane wreckage and brought to Denver last night by Lowry Field Officers.

The crash victims were Second Lieutenants Richard J. Rosebush and John L. Rencher, both based at Ellington Field, Texas.

Home addresses were not available.

Lt. Aubrey Cookman, Lowry Field public relations officer, said Rosebush and Rencher left Ellington Field with two other plane crews Saturday morning on a routine training flight to Lowry Field near Denver

The other two planes reached Lowry Field safely.

Bert Shirkey, a highway worker, reached the wrecked plane on horseback after observing searching planes flying over the scene in a sparsely settled region about 50 miles Southeast of Denver

About 30 Lowry planes participated in the search. The missing craft was sighted by Maj. Charles H. Leitner and Staff Sergeant D P Little.

One of two Cessna AT-17's Bobcat (#42-25), flown by a relatively inexperienced pilot became separated from the leader on a navigation training flight and crashed at 1745 MWT while attempting to fly "contact" over unfamiliar, irregular terrain east of Denver in poor weather conditions. The two men were killed instantly.
