Joseph Hayward lived in West Troy, Watervliet Twp, Albany Co, NY, where he can be found living with his wife, Maria, in the 1850 US Federal Census. In 1834–1835, he helped build the first railroad bridge accross the Hudson River at Troy, NY. He is also known for the High Bridge accross the Croton River in New York, built in 1842 and collapsing in 1879, as well as for rebuilding the Phillies Bridge accross the Wallkill River in New Paltz, NY, in 1843. This bridge burned and collapsed in 1952.
He was the son of Elizabeth Brown and James Hayward.
