Rev. Thomas Carney, brother of Philip, Patrick and Michael Carney and Mrs. James Finnerty of Frankfort, died at his home in Platsmouth Neb., July 2, aged 54. Father Carney was born in Ireland, and at the age of 20 came to this country and to Ilion. He lived in Ilion with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Carney, for a number of years. He was graduated from Niagara college in 1881. He was ordained to the priesthood and was given a parish at Norfolk, Neb. He remained in charge of that parish for twenty two years, then went to Plattsmouth. He was taken ill last February and gradually failed. The last time Father Carney was in Ilion was three years ago, when he came to attend the funeral of his brother, Rev. Eugene Carney, who died at Cohoes while in charge of that parish. The remains arrived in this village Sunday and services were held from the Church of Annunciation at 10:30 o'clock Monday morning, largely attended by sorrowing friends and relates. The Rev. Father J. V. Quinn, rector of the church was celebrant of the mass and the Rev. Father Hyland of Troy was deacon; the Rev. Father Kiveny of Cohoes was sub-deacon and the Rev. Father White of Little Falls was master of ceremonies, Miss Katyhryn Quinn presided at the organ. William J. Lewis sang "Calvary" very feeling and Christopher Mackin sang "O Salutaris" at the conclusion of the service. Benedictus was rendered by all the priests. The floral offerings consisted of many beautiful set pieces. The priests present from out of town were the Rev. Father Hyland of Troy, the Rev. Father Keveny of Cohoes, the Rev. Father O'Connor of St. Johnsville, the Rev. Father Toolan of Newport, the Rev. Father White of Little Falls, the Rev. Father Halpin of Herkimer, the Rev. Father Wallace of Frankfort, the Rev. Father Riley of Schenectady, the Rev. Father Dolan of New York and the Rev. Father Dolan of Johnstown. The bearers were Richard Carney, Peter Carney, Michael Carney, John Carney, Benard Carney and James Carney. Interment was made in St. Agnes's Cemetery. (Ilion Citizen, Friday, July 10, 1903)
