Two local men killed after one-vehicle accident Saturday on Arbala Road
A Sulphur Springs man and Emory man were killed early Saturday after they were thrown from a pickup that rolled over several times on Arbala Road. John Wesley DOUGAN, 21, of Sulphur Springs and Harold Shane COMBS, 21, of Emory were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 3:45 a.m. Saturday by Hopkins County Justice of the Peace Yvonne King. The body of COMBS, driver of the 1994 Ford pickup, was taken to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy. The accident occurred at 2:56 a.m.
about 6.5 miles south of Sulphur Springs on FM 2297. According to preliminary reports by the Texas Department of Public Safety, the pickup was southbound when the driver lost control and the truck rolled over "numerous
times." The truck came to a stop after hitting a tree. The driver ejected from the vehicle, and investigators believe he may have struck a telephone pole. DOUGAN was located about 145 feet from the resting point of the pickup
by Trooper Brian Worley during a follow-up investigation, according to the reports, which also state neither man was wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck. Worley and other investigators were back at the scene of the
accident Monday morning collecting data for reports. The investigation into the cause of the accident has not been concluded, Worley said Monday
morning.
