Death of Mr. Maugunson (sic)
At his late home in the northern part of this county last Thursday, at the ripe old age of seventy-two years, A. P. Maugunson, one of the most esteemed citizens of this neighborhood, departed this life. He was a man with quite a history. He was a Swede and left his native land thirty years ago to come to free America, and to enable him to reach our shores he had to sell his labor and that of his child (sic) for a number of years to the ship captain, who on reaching this country sold the time of Mr. M. and his sons to Col. Gardner, then a prominent citizen and farmer of Giles County who brought them to the South and they lived up to the letter of the contract and when all was paid they began to gather about them of their own and soon were substantial citizens, and he lived and died that worthy life. His Sons are all useful and good citizens. [The above article was typed exactly as written in an Athens Newspaper in 1902 after the death of A. P. Magnusson. The spelling of his name was incorrect.]
