OLIVENHAIN/CARLSBAD - Born Ruth Violet Knechtel in 1919, Mom passed away on May 8, 2012.

She was the third of four children born to Frank and Johanna Helena Knechtel of Carmel Valley, making her a third generation San Diego County resident. Mom was preceded by the death of our father, Emil F. Buman, who was a member of a San Diego County pioneer family from Olivenhain. Grandma attended grades 1-8 in the one room Soledad School in Carmel Valley.

Because there was no high school in Carmel Valley, Grandma moved to La Jolla where she babysat for a family in exchange for room and board to attend La Jolla High School. She took some time off school to take care of her ill mother and later graduated from Oceanside High School. She attended Palomar College and finished her formal education by correspondence specializing in family history through Brigham Young University. Later, she taught Genealogy at Mira Costa College and Carlsbad City Library.

Ruth was a past President of the North San Diego County Genealogical Society, member of the Order of Eastern Star, and a volunteer leader in the Girl Scouts of America for over 30 years. Great-grandma is survived by four of her five children; 15 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren, with two more coming soon.

She is loved and will be missed by all who knew her. A graveside service will be held at 11am, on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Olivenhain Pioneer Cemetery. All are welcome. Published in U-T San Diego on May 11, 2012
