Robert, the eldest son of Bradford and Amelia Standish Burlin was a veteran of the Civil War, Having seen action as a sergeant in Companies A and D of the 6th Indiana Infantry of the Union Army, in October 1892 he applied for and received a pension, which upon his death in 1901 was paid to his widow Catharine. After the war, he and his family moved to Ohio where he worked as a carriage painter, a trade he presumably learned from his father who was a partner of a carriage-manufacturing firm in Jamestown. The family ultimately moved to Cleveland, Ohio where his younger two children were born.
