Ammi Almanzia Brown was my great-grandfather. Born in Boston in 1829, his early life is completely unknown. He was residing in Palmyra, Wisconsin when he entered the Army for the Civil War as a Private in Company A, 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Heavy Artillery on August 22, 1862. He was discharged near Washington DC on June 26, 1865. At some point he married Almira Sanders, who was born in New York in about 1843. She appeared with her parents, Henry J. Sanders and Olive L. Mowry, in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses of Norwich, Chenango County, NY. Ammi and Almira appeared together in the 1870 Census of Guilford, Chenango County, but they did not surface again until Aug 1881 when my grandfather, Addison Avery Brown, was born in Verndale, Minnesota.
Ammi moved to Montesano, Washington in June 1893, circumstances unknown. His health failing, he was admitted to the Washington Soldiers Home Colony at Orting in May 1897. He died there on Jun 20 1899.
Ammi's father was Ammi T. Brown, b. ca 1799 in Connecticut, last seen in the 1870 Census of Guilford, Chenango County, NY, residing with his son. Prior to his marriage to Almira, Ammi A. Brown was married to a Deborah, b. ca 1832 in New York.
He was married briefly a third time to a Deborah S., but she deserted him after three days, and he divorced her in Nov 1894 in Pierce County, Washington.
In Jun 1895, he married a fourth time, to a Rachel A, but they separated in Spring 1898.
I have precious little other information regarding Ammi A. Brown's parents or any siblings or other spouses and/or children he may have had, and would be extremely grateful to anyone who could provide the slightest clue. I can be reached by email or via my website at www.doddridgecountyroots.com
